A Somatic Approach to Working with Trauma


About This Training

Trauma is part of our human experience. The therapist’s job is to help alleviate symptoms and inspire the client towards health and healing. This task can be daunting. Faced with not only with a myriad of therapeutic techniques but also overwhelm and empathic burnout, it is essential that the therapist learn a sustainable repertoire of tools for self care and sensory-emotional regulation.

In this intensive training, you will practice powerful somatic and mindfulness tools for working with trauma. You will also learn unique practices to resource you in the therapist’s seat. These tools will help you to reduce compassion fatigue, a common challenge in the helping professions, by helping you to develop radical relational compassion, an expansive and deeply connected state that will allow your work to unfold with greater skill and ease. Not only will you learn specific practices for cultivating deeper self-compassion, but you’ll also discover why teaching your clients to view their own healing with compassion is critical to transforming the trauma experience.

Another important focus of this training will be to examine the internalized and often hidden beliefs that clients and therapists hold around trauma. How do we as clinicians and healers understand trauma? What do we believe about trauma? How do we approach trauma clients and their healing journey? Many of our unexamined beliefs about trauma are culturally determined and greatly impact trauma healing.

From Trauma to Dharma offers a new framework for viewing human suffering that’s imbedded in a Buddhist perspective—a new way of holding the experience of trauma that deeply supports the healing process.  You will learn to work with pain and suffering from a compassionate and resourced understanding arising from your body’s deep wisdom.  You will also learn specific body-centered meditation practices that will leave you feeling more connected to yourself and others and more fully alive in your body. The perspective we take is strength and resource-based, and will help you to be not only more clinically skilled but more deeply emotionally resourced as well.

Level 1 of this training offers online learning at your own pace. This unique 5-week program will help you to build a solid theoretical foundation for working with trauma and provide a basic understanding what trauma in the body means. It will also introduce you to basic Buddhist principles and personal mindfulness and somatic practices for resourcing your work as a trauma therapist. Our Level 1 trauma training provides a rich online learning environment that includes downloadable MP3 audio files, articles, contemplative exercises, and chat room conversations. You can take Level 1 as a stand-alone course or use it to build the needed personal and theoretical foundation and preparation for the experiential and group learning provided by our Level 2 trauma training.

Level 2 of From Trauma to Dharma offers two 5-day intensives featuring experiential learning, live demonstrations, and practice and supervision.  It's designed to help you integrate the theoretical knowledge you gain from our Level 1 training with the hands on practice of trauma therapy. Each intensive allows ample room for experiential exercises and supervised practice in the therapist’s seat.

From Trauma to Dharma, developed by Manuela Mischke-Reeds, integrates her expertise in trauma therapy, Hakomi Experiential Psychology, attachment theory, movement therapies and embodied meditation techniques she has practiced for over 25 years. The specialized tools and perspectives this training offers will work harmoniously with any therapeutic modality you currently use with clients.

This training will benefit psychotherapists, counselors, interns, health practitioners, and other helping professionals who want to learn precise techniques for healing trauma and maintaining their own sense of health and well being when working with trauma. It will also be useful for anyone with a strong interest in 1) mindfulness as a therapeutic tool, 2) self-discovery through meditation and somatic practices, and/or 3) applying a Buddhist perspective to current trauma theory and techniques.


1) An application is required to attend this training. In addition, previous Hakomi training or a Hakomi introductory workshop is required. ManuelaManuela Mischke-Reeds, MA, MFT, is a Certified Hakomi Trainer, with over 25 years of teaching and psychotherapy experience. She trains health professionals in the United States, Australia, Germany and Israel, including an intensive trauma training she offers in Germany each year. Manuela is also a faculty member at the John F. Kennedy University and Sofia University and teaches in the California Institute of Integral Studies Certificate Program in Mindfulness and Compassion. Manuela brings together a strong background in somatic trauma therapies, attachment and infant mental health, Buddhism and movement therapies.  A meditator for over 25 years, her approach to working with trauma is grounded in a dharmic perspective, the use of mindfulness practices and somatic techniques. ShaiShai Lavie, MA, MFT, is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Certified Hakomi Therapist and Teacher with a private practice in San Rafael. He is also certified in the Somatic Experiencing method of working with trauma. Shai serves as adjunct professor at Sofia University (formerly the Institute for Transpersonal Psychology), and is on the faculty of John F. Kennedy University. He also teaches in the Mindfulness and Compassion Certificate Program at the California Institute of Integral Studies. Shai leads transformational groups that integrate Hakomi, Somatic Experiencing, group process, ritual and dream work. Shai has led therapeutic groups in Marin County and San Francisco schools for over 10 years.  He also has led over a dozen wilderness Rites of Passage programs for youth. Shai has been practicing Vipassana meditation for 25 years. Since 2001, Shai taught meditation in the Teen and Family Program at Spirit Rock Meditation Center.
